Leave of Absence from a Russian University: The Real Mari State Story & the Documents That Protect Your Seat
An Indian student at Mari State University wrote the most honest account of Russian MBBS life to hit r/MEDICOreTARDS — 891 upvotes, 210 comments. The part nobody asks about included this line: "Getting the university to grant leave of absence was its own battle. Somehow I managed it. Returned to India four weeks before NEET 2026." Then, the second time: "The administration wasn't willing. I decided to take the risk anyway."
This is the silent crisis of studying medicine abroad: Russian universities rarely grant leave, and leaving without permission risks both your seat and your visa. A Nigerian student on r/AskARussian described the other side of the same trap: "My visa expired while I was doing medschool postings in my home country... the application for the visa is so nailbitingly slow. The academic session resumed yesterday, so I've already missed a day, and we've already postponed my return flight by almost two weeks."
Why "Going Home" Is Suddenly a Crisis in 2026
- The NEET re-attempt wave. After the NEET 2026 cancellation and re-exam, more students than ever are trying to return to India for the exam while keeping their Russian seat. The Mari State student did it twice — and the second time the administration refused.
- Russian academic leave rules are strict. Академический отпуск (academic leave) exists in Russian law, but universities grant it reluctantly — mainly for medical or documented family reasons, never casually for exam preparation.
- Unauthorized absence = expulsion grounds. Skipping classes without approved leave is absenteeism (прогулы), and Russian universities use it to thin overcrowded batches — the exact over-admission trap of Topic #118.
- The visa clock keeps running. Your child's student visa and migration registration are tied to continuous study in Russia. Leave the country for too long and the visa chain starts breaking.
The Visa-Expiry Trap: What Happens to the Visa While Your Child Is Home
- Migration registration dies on exit. When your child leaves Russia, the migration registration at the dorm or flat is cancelled. Re-entry restarts the 7-working-day clock (Topic #114).
- A student visa left unused for months can be annulled. Under Russian rules, a student visa is invalidated if the holder stays outside Russia beyond the permitted continuous absence. Long exam-prep leaves are exactly how students lose their visa without noticing.
- Re-entry needs a fresh invitation. Returning to Russia requires a valid visa — which for many students means the university must issue a new invitation (приглашение) and the whole visa process restarts. The Nigerian student's nightmare — "nailbitingly slow," missed days, postponed flights — is the norm, not the exception.
- The university's cooperation decides everything. The international office must confirm continued enrollment, issue documents, and support the visa. If the university is hostile — "the administration wasn't willing" — the student is stuck in India with a seat in Russia they cannot legally return to.
- Semester structure matters. Leave that crosses a semester boundary usually requires re-enrollment formalities. Check the academic calendar before booking anything.
The Right Way to Take Leave — The Documented Path
- File the academic leave application (заявление на академический отпуск) in writing, early. Russian universities require a formal application to the rector before the intended leave date. File it 4–8 weeks ahead — the Mari State student's "own battle" started because the request was late and unstructured.
- Attach the right supporting documents. Medical leave needs a medical certificate (медицинская справка); family leave needs documented grounds. The more formal the evidence, the harder it is to refuse.
- Get the leave order (приказ о предоставлении академического отпуска) in writing. An approved leave exists only when the university issues a formal order. Verbal "okays" from the international office protect nobody.
- Confirm the visa plan before leaving. Ask the international office in writing: will the visa survive the absence? Will a new invitation be issued for return? How long is re-entry processing?
- Keep every document translated and stored. The application, the order, the medical certificate, and the email trail — certified translations make them usable for visa officers, the migration service, and the university.
Already Home Without Approval? The Recovery Checklist
- Email the international office today. Formally request retroactive leave or document the reason for absence (medical certificate, family emergency proof). Silence from your side looks like abandonment.
- Check the visa's expiry date and the 3-month mark. If the visa is close to expiry or the absence is crossing the annulment threshold, the re-entry invitation process must start immediately.
- Start the invitation (приглашение) process. The university must issue it through the MVD channel. Ask for it in writing and track it weekly — the Nigerian student's experience shows how slow this can be.
- Do not overstay the semester boundary. If the absence crosses into a new semester without formal leave, re-enrollment may be refused — the expulsion hook again.
- Prepare the document pack for the visa application. Valid passport, new invitation, certified translations of the leave order or absence justification, proof of continued enrollment, and funds proof — the complete list for the Russian consulate.
